The Griffin/Dugans ...

"I was a bit skeptical when we were asked to meet with Sterling prior to our portrait session. We, like everyone else, have too many responsibilities and too little time. A meeting in Silver Spring would require hours of our time, our most precious commodity. All changed when we actually met with Linda and Sterling. Aside from a pleasant afternoon with two lovely people, we got to know each other quickly and discovered many similarities among us. Our portrait session several days later was more than a mere appointment. We gathered with our new friends. Great photography is such an intimate experience and it is impossible to achieve among strangers. The proof was in the pudding. We simply agonized over our final selection. Our photographs were so revealing of who we are and our relationship to each other that we quickly realized the wisdom of that initial meeting. Sterling and his assistants are discerning and intuitive artists and their skill was evident in their work product. We proclaimed over and over at that final meeting, "That photograph captures us." We will treasure our photographs, which we hope will become a lasting legacy."

When Olivia and Emily were four and six years old, you captured the heart, innocence, and beauty of our daughters in a way that no one else could.  Words cannot express our gratitude for the artistry, creativity, and sheer magic that was poured into your portraits.  Our experience, from the planning session, the photo shoot, slide show, and finally two First Edition Books has become part of our family history. Our friends and family are amazed at how you captured our daughters’ personalities.

Nine years later, when we returned for a family portrait, including our Bichon Frise, Oliver, again, the experience was just as remarkable. 
Thank you for this incredible family heirloom that we treasure, and that will be enjoyed by generations to come.

"Our experience of having family portraits made was utterly surprising in how simple the process was - from the consultation through the actual session - the most difficult part was choosing amongst the great variety of images.

We were stunned to see what Sterling had captured on film because, as we left the location the day of the shoot, we all agreed it had been too easy and Sterling could not have gotten anything terrific on film. We were so glad to be so wrong!

We were skittish about trying to get pictures of the whole family - certain the kids would "act up" and make the situation difficult. Fortunately, Sterling and his staff were so accomplished at entertaining kids that my brood still talks about how funny and nice he is..."

The Gordons ...

The Gordon's have a 17 year-old autistic son. Here is their story ...

"I used to feel regret when I'd walk into a friend's home and see the family portrait hanging prominently in the living room or family room. We, too, had hoped to have a family portrait, but with a non-verbal autistic child, the odds of even getting through a portrait sitting seemed impossibly low. So, we kept putting off the task of finding a photographer and getting a portrait, hoping, of course, that Alex would mature enough to tolerate the experience. But, suddenly Alex was turning 17 and his older brother was already in his late twenties so we started feeling that it was now or never. Fortunately, we found Sterling and Linda. Both together and separately, they assured us that they had years of experience working with disabled children and calmed all of our fears. Of course, I was apprehensive that afternoon in June when Sterling and Linda showed up. Alex was not in a pleasant mood and it was very difficult to coax him into standing with his brother and parents, let alone get him to smile. Sterling and Linda, though, were not at all troubled by Alex's behavior and were able to work with him and through his yelling. They had planned the sitting so that Alex had enough breaks that his behavior  never really got out of hand. When we went to see the proofs, though, I held my breath, remembering how difficult Alex had been that day. As soon as I saw the first picture, the tears started rolling down my face as I saw the beautiful pictures Sterling had done for us, capturing the essence of our family. Finally we had a real family portrait  - not just a hurriedly snapped family photo. Today, we have Sterling's pictures scattered throughout the house, including our favorite family portrait hanging proudly in our family room. I am forever grateful to Sterling and lInda for giving us beautiful family pictures that we can enjoy today and pass along to our sons tomorrow."

"Every parent of a child with autism or other developmental disabilities knows that there are moments when our child's face and attitude show why we love them, and reflect our care and our pride. Every parent knows there are times when the family is clicking together, enjoying each other. Unfortunately, those moments and times are very hard to capture. I know. I fancied myself an amateur photographer, but getting good pictures of my autistic son was far beyond my skill. Getting pictures of the family together was impossible.

So my wife and I were very wary when we first had contact with Sterling Portraits. Our son with autism was 17, non-verbal, and very leery of photographers, but none seemed capable of rising to the challenge. Sterling and his partner Linda met the challenge posed by our son and our family situation, and more, His skill was amazing, his adaptability even more so. Even though our son was in a terrible mood on the day scheduled for the portraits, Sterling and Linda did their best  to put him at ease, and capture him by himself, and with the rest of the family, in moments that reflected the happiness and cohesiveness that we can experience. Sterling captured moments that have become indelible memories for us, hanging on our walls, in books, and in photos that we proudly display on our desks. We do not hesitate to unreservedly recommend Sterling Portraits to any parent of a child with special needs. This is based not only on our own experience, but on the experiences we now know that others have had with Sterling and Linda."

So, I can't begin to tell  you how excited my wife was when I told her that story. She loves that guy now."

Doug and I wanted to thank you again for the hard work and creative expression that you, Linda and Lida put into our photo session. As I told you, I was nervous about how the photo shoot would go, especially with our little girls. It certainly exceeded our expectations and was fun for all of us. The girls and a great time.

"Our portrait session, where Sterling, Linda, and Lida spent almost three hours at our home with our 2-year old, 5-year-old and 6-year-old, was unbelievably painless. In fact, our children had a blast.

Within moments of arriving, Sterling had all three of them eating out of the palm of his hand. Even our wiggly, slightly reluctant, 2-year-old son was mesmerized from the onset by Sterling's warmth and attention. By the time the session was over, the children were genuinely sad to see Sterling, Linda, and Lida leave.

They talked about Sterling, Linda, and Lida for the rest of the weekend--practicing the "magic" and balancing tricks Sterling had taught them, talking about wearing his hat and cowboy boots, and playing with the "prizes" they were given at the end of the session. The experience surpassed even my most hopeful expectations."
